Meetup #2 Report: Welcome Event ~New Beginnings in Sendai~

The Welcome Event “New Beginnings in Sendai” was held to greet international students and residents starting their new lives in Sendai. Designed to create a warm and friendly atmosphere, the event offered participants a chance to connect, share their aspirations, and gain inspiration for how they want to shape their life in Sendai—while also learning about the wide range of support available for daily living and startup activities in Sendai city. The event was hosted by SENDAI Global Lounge and co-organized by Tohoku University Global Learning Center, IPLANET, HULT PRIZE Tohoku University, TUSTEM.

Introduction: Kicking Off with New Connections and Fresh Beginnings

After a brief introduction to the SENDAI Global Lounge, members of IPLANET shared the organization’s vision of connecting people and fostering collaboration. The highlight of the opening session was a talk by Kendal, a former exchange student at Tohoku University. During his time in Sendai, he actively participated in business-related programs organized by the university and the city. Now, having returned from Sweden, he has launched his own startup together with his co-founder Hans in Sendai, addressing the social issue of internet and gaming addiction—a topic he began exploring during his studies here.

Sharing his journey in Sendai, Kendal inspired participants to look beyond the campus, explore local opportunities, engage with social issues in Japan, and take bold steps toward bringing their own ideas to life.

Networking session: Connecting Ideas and People Over Friendly Talks

After the introduction, participants moved on to a free networking session. Around 200 attendees eagerly mingled with new friends from all over the world, exchanging ideas, stories, and experiences. Many exchange students had just arrived in Japan that very week, adding an extra sense of excitement to the gathering. The evening wrapped up with a fun activity, keeping the atmosphere lively and engaging as conversations and laughter continued throughout the evening.

Many attendees also expressed strong interest in entrepreneurship, startup contests, and business opportunities in Sendai. They asked a wide range of questions about life and work in the city—from housing and job options to the process of establishing a company in Japan. There was a clear sense of curiosity and excitement, with many expressing enthusiasm for future events and programs that would help them connect more deeply with the local community.
